20. January 2020 : Vladimir Ashkenazy retires from conducting

Vladimir Ashkenazy, the Iceland Symphony’s Conductor Laureate, has announced that he is retiring from conducting. Ashkenazy has made an invaluable contribution to Icelandic musical life, as a pianist, conductor, and organizer. The orchestra extends its deepest thanks to Ashkenazy for a unique and inspiring collaboration that reaches back more than half a century.

17. December 2019 : Iceland Symphony tours the United Kingdom in February

Britain's concertgoers are set to experience the Iceland Symphony's celebrated tonal richness and élan in February 2020, courtesy of its first ever tour of the UK. The orchestra will give eight concerts with Yan Pascal Tortelier and solo pianists Jean-Efflam Bavouzet and Yeol Eum Son.

21. November 2019 : Successful tour of Germany and Austria with Daníel and Víkingur

The Iceland Symphony is back home from a successful tour of Germany and Austria. Daníel Bjarnason conducted the orchestra at five concerts in three cities with soloists Víkingur Ólafsson and Radovan Vlatković. Performing works by Icelandic composers Anna Thorvaldsdottir and Daníel Bjarnason as well as by Grieg, Tchaikovsky and Sibelius.

15. November 2019 : Iceland Symphony tours Germany and Austria

The Iceland Symphony is on tour in Germany and Austria, with soloists Víkingur Ólafsson and Radovan Vlatković, under the baton of Daníel Bjarnason. Concerts will be held in Großes Festspielhaus in Salzburg, Konzerthaus in Berlin, and Herkulessaal in München.

16. October 2019 : Víkingur named Gramophone’s Artist of the Year 2019

Víkingur Ólafsson is Gramophone Magazine's Artist 2019. Víkingur is well established as one of Iceland's foremost musicians on the world stage and this award is a true testament to that. The Iceland Symphony's next performances with Víkingur will be in Harpa Concert Hall on November 7th and 8th followed by a concert tour of Germany and Austria.

12. June 2019 : Eva Ollikainen appointed as Chief Conductor and Artistic Director

The Iceland Symphony announced today the appointment of Finnish conductor Eva Ollikainen as Chief Conductor and Artistic Director beginning with the 2020/21 season. Before her inaugural season, Ollikainen takes to the stage in March 2020 for the orchestra's 70th anniversary concert.

12. June 2019 : Season 2019/20

Next season, a host of outstanding artists will visit Iceland and perform with the Iceland Symphony at Harpa Concert Hall. 

This season marks the 70th anniversary of the Iceland Symphony which will be celebrated throughout the season. As part of the celebration the orchestra will stage Richard Wagner’s opera Die Walküre (The Valkyrie) for the first time in Iceland.
