Vladimir Ashkenazy retires from conducting
Vladimir Ashkenazy, the Iceland Symphony’s Conductor Laureate, has announced that he is retiring from conducting. Ashkenazy has made an invaluable contribution to Icelandic musical life, as a pianist, conductor, and organizer. The orchestra extends its deepest thanks to Ashkenazy for a unique and inspiring collaboration that reaches back more than half a century.

Britain's concertgoers are set to experience the Iceland Symphony's celebrated tonal richness and élan in February 2020, courtesy of its first ever tour of the UK. The orchestra will give eight concerts with Yan Pascal Tortelier and solo pianists Jean-Efflam Bavouzet and Yeol Eum Son.

The Iceland Symphony is back home from a successful tour of Germany and Austria. Daníel Bjarnason conducted the orchestra at five concerts in three cities with soloists Víkingur Ólafsson and Radovan Vlatković. Performing works by Icelandic composers Anna Thorvaldsdottir and Daníel Bjarnason as well as by Grieg, Tchaikovsky and Sibelius.

Next season, a host of outstanding artists will visit Iceland and perform with the Iceland Symphony at Harpa Concert Hall.
This season marks the 70th anniversary of the Iceland Symphony which will be celebrated throughout the season. As part of the celebration the orchestra will stage Richard Wagner’s opera Die Walküre (The Valkyrie) for the first time in Iceland.
