Guðni Tómasson appointed managing director of the Iceland Symphony Orchestra
The Board of Directors of the Iceland Symphony Orchestra has appointed Guðni Tómasson to the position of Managing Director of the Iceland Symphony Orchestra, starting 6 November 2024. His appointment is for a term of four years.
Guðni has worked extensively in cultural media since the early 2000s, focusing particularly on promoting music and the arts through the Icelandic National Broadcasting Service, where he most recently served as Arts Editor. He was Chairman of board of the Icelandic Symphony Orchestra in 2010 to 2014, served on the Board of Harpa Music and Conference Centre in 2019 to 2023 and chaired Harpa's Arts Council in 2022 to 2024. Additionally, Guðni served as Cultural Advisor to the Minister of Education and Culture in 2012 to 2013, during which he chaired the committee that drafted the government's cultural policy, adopted in 2013. He has also held numerous other advisory and leadership roles within the cultural sector.
Born in 1976, Guðni holds a Master's degree in Cultural Management from Bifröst University and a Master's degree in Art History from the University St. Andrews in Scotland. Guðni succeeds Lára Sóley Jóhannsdóttir, who has served as Managing Director since 2019.
