This fascinating programme at the Iceland Symphony contains exciting music from the twentieth and twenty-first centuries. Carl Nielsen's comic opera Masquerade has been among Denmark's most loved musical creations ever since its premiere in 1906, and its sparkling overture is among Nielsen's most performed works. The Czech composer Bohuslav Martinu wrote his oboe concerto in 1955; it is a charming and delightful work with echoes of Stravinsky. The soloist is German oboist Julia Hantschel, who has been the Iceland Symphony's leading oboist since 2018.
Anna Thorvaldsdottir, Iceland Symphony's Composer-in-Residence, is among the leading composers of her generation and has received many prizes and honors for her work. Given its premiere at this concert, AION is a new symphony, although the music is partly based on a symphonic dance work created by Þorvaldsdóttir in collaboration with choreographer Erna Ómarsdóttir. AION was co-comissioned by the Iceland Symphony and the Gothenburg Symphony which premiered the work in 2018. A Swedish reviewer described that iteration of the work as a “force of nature” and the work was recently nominated for the Prince Pierre de Monaco Composition Prize. Former winners of that award include György Ligeti, Sofia Gubaidulina, and Elliott Carter.
