Mezzo-soprano Arnheiður Eiríksdóttir has shot to stardom in recent years and has received, amongst other awards, the International Opera Awards Rising Star of the Year in 2024. Here she performs some of Gustav Mahler's most beautiful songs: Lieder eines fahrenden Gesellen Songs of a Wayfarer, which deals with the loves and sorrows of the journeyman, and the moving Urlicht, or Primordial Light from Symphony No. 2, which describes the desire for relief from worldly suffering.
In the second half of the concert, Tomáš Hanus, principal guest conductor of the Iceland Symphony Orchestra, conducts the beautiful Symphony No. 1 by Johannes Brahms, which took the composer over 20 years to complete. The wait for the work was certainly worth it, as the symphony is one of the cornerstones of Romantic musical literature.
