The future of music in Iceland depends in no small part on the young people who study here or are taking their first steps in the professional world. The annual young soloists' competition gives outstanding students the opportunity to perform a concerto or sing a selection of vocal music with the Iceland Symphony Orchestra — an invaluable experience for any classical musician.

The Iceland Symphony sponsors the competition in cooperation with the Iceland Academy of the Arts (IAA). It is open to university-level students, irrespective of which school they attend. This concert is eagerly anticipated every year, and the atmosphere at the concert is nothing short of magical.

The competition was held in autumn 2020, and the winners are Íris Björk Gunnarsdóttir, Johanna Brynja Ruminy, Jón Arnar Einarsson and Marta Kristín Friðriksdóttir.

At the podium is Finland's Anna-Maria Helsing, who has conducted the Iceland Symphony numerous times, with excellent results. She was Chief Conductor of the Oulu Symphony from 2010 through 2013, the first woman to hold such a position in Finland.
