Each year the Iceland Symphony Orchestra and the Iceland University of the Arts sponsor a competition for young soloists. The competition is open to students at the collegiate level, and the winners perform a solo concerto with the Iceland Symphony. At the podium is Brazilian conductor Ligia Amadio, Chief Conductor of the Montevideo Philharmonic in Uruguay, who conducted the Iceland Symphony's Women's concert in 2015 with excellent results.

The Iceland Symphony Orchestra and the Iceland University of the Arts join forces to support our most talented young performers on their path towards the world of professional musicianship. This concert is eagerly anticipated every year, and the atmosphere at the concert is nothing short of magical. The competition was held in autumn 2018, and the winners are Guðbjartur Hákonarson, Harpa Ósk Björnsdóttir, Hjörtur Páll Eggertsson and Silja Elsabet Brynjarsdóttir.
