Bernd Ogrodnik and his puppets bring the story of Peter and the Wolf alive in this appealing, child-friendly performance by the Iceland Symphony and Halldóra Geirharðsdóttir. Bernd is one of the world’s pre-eminent puppet masters, and his magical Peter and the Wolf performances have triumphed wherever they are programmed. Peter and the Wolf is one of the most beloved musical adventures of all time, a story in which each character is portrayed by an instrument or instrument group in the orchestra. Although the reception was lukewarm at its 1936 premiere in Moscow, it is no exaggeration to say that the work has become a worldwide favourite — and not only among children, owing to its youthful exuberance.

The first movement of the Toy Symphony attributed to Leopold Mozart (Wolfgang’s father) will be performed with the assistance of Maximus Musicus and a group of young soloists who form a toy sextet. The atmosphere will be buoyant when Maxi and friends join with the Iceland Symphony, and it will only improve when the orchestra plays Ravel’s uniquely popular Bolero.
