Magic and sorcery take the centre of the stage for this hour-long concert in the ISO's Green Series. The programme begins with the overture to Mozart's The Magic Flute before wending its way through JK Rowling's world of wizardry, characterised by the highly evocative music in the Harry PotterTM movies.
Then Páll Palomares, the ISO's principal second violin, takes flight with Spanish composer Pablo de Sarasate's dazzling Zigeunerweisen, which includes a tune Icelanders will recognise as “Til eru fræ.” Although Paul Dukas' The Sorcerer's Apprentice is based on a poem by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, many modern-day listeners recognise the music and the story of the hapless apprentice from the Disney film Fantasia. The programme concludes with the final section of Stravinsky's The Firebird.
The concert is an hour long, with no intermission, and is broadcast live on RÚV.
