METAXIS is a new composition by Anna Þorvaldsdóttir, in which the open spaces and hallways of Harpa play a key role. The composer describes the work as 'an installation for scattered orchestra and space'. In METAXIS, the orchestra is divided into several groups of varying sizes and placed in different locations all around Harpa.

Audiences have a unique opportunity to actively explore the music from different perspectives, as they wander through the halls of Harpa and feel how their experience of the music changes with every step. This gives each and every listener the chance to connect with the building blocks of Anna's music: the layers of sound, the musical progression, and the reverberation of the space.

The musicians are spread out over different levels in the building and blend together in myriad ways, creating a unique sound world with innumerable textures. The piece is conducted by Eva Ollikainen, chief conductor of the ISO.

The world premiere of METAXIS is part of the opening celebration of the 2024 Reykjavík Arts Festival and of the festival's collaboration with Harpa and the ISO.

The performance of METAXIS lasts around half an hour. Metaxis will be performed at 4 PM and at 5 PM.

Free admission but booking necessary. Ticket bookings open May 20.
