Polish conductor Bohdan Wodiczko is among the foreign musicians who have greatly enriched Iceland's musical life over the years. He served as Chief Conductor of the Iceland Symphony Orchestra from 1965 until 1968. In cooperation with the Polish Embassy in Iceland, the ISO is holding a commemorative concert to honour Wodiczko and his contribution to music in Iceland.
Polish-Canadian pianist Jan Lisiecki began recording for Deutsche Grammophon at age fifteen and has ranked among the world's most sought-out pianists in the dozen years since. He received worldwide acclaim for his recording of Chopin's two piano concertos, the former of which, featured on this programme, is astoundingly beautiful, ranging from the melancholy to the majestic.
Bohdan Wodiczko premiered a large number of Icelandic works, including Jón Nordal's Adagio fyrir strengi, which ranks among the most remarkable Icelandic orchestral pieces from the latter half of the 20th century. Witold Lutosławski's Symphony no. 1 is a lively yet powerful piece that gives the entire orchestra the chance to shine.
