Chinese-American pianist Eric Lu has recently been catapulted into stardom after winning the prestigious Leeds International Piano Competition in 2018, only 20 years of age. Lu has been praised by critics for his depth and subtlety of interpretation, particularly in the works of Mozart. In this concert, he performs Mozart's final piano concerto, No. 27 in B-flat major, a piece that radiates warmth and humanity.
The other two pieces on the programme are from Bohemia, one from the 19th century and the other from the 20th. First up is Bohuslav Martinů's zestful and eager Double Concerto for Two String Orchestras, Piano, and Timpani, written during the turbulent years preceding the Second World War. The concert ends on a very different note, with Antonin Dvořák's Symphony No. 8. Many consider it the most tender and original of his nine symphonies, full of enchanting evocations of nature and birdsong.
*Dinis Sousa, set to conduct the concert had to cancel due to unforeseen circumstances. In his place we welcome Tomáš Hanus who will conduct the concert.
