ILAN VOLKOV ASSUMES POSITION OF MUSIC DIRECTOR AT ICELAND SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA

Ilan Volkov conducts his first concert as Music Director of the Iceland Symphony Orchestra in Reykjavík on Thursday 29 September at 1930. The concert, which takes place in the recently opened Harpa Concert Hall, will feature Gustav Mahler's Symphony no. 7 as well as I hear the water dreaming and Air by Toru Takemitsu with Icelandic flautist Melkorka Ólafsdóttir, a recent finalist in the Carl Nielsen Flute Competition. The following day Volkov will lead a conducting masterclass in Harpa with four young conductors from Brazil, Finland, Germany and the United Kingdom. Later in the season, in March 2012, Volkov curates a festival of contemporary music and in May 2012 conducts the Icelandic premiere of Berlioz's Romeo and Juliet at the Reykjavík Arts Festival.

Ilan Volkov's association with the Iceland Symphony Orchestra began in January 2003. Following the announcement of his new appointment he said:

“The extremely interesting and vibrant music scene in Iceland creates unique artistic opportunities. Having enjoyed working with the orchestra on a number of occasions, I am very much looking forward to a close association with the players and presenting adventurous and challenging programmes. I am particularly excited about creating an annual new music festival in which we will collaborate with contemporary composers, non-classical musicians and artists.”

Further highlights of ISO's 11/12 season include a complete Beethoven Symphony cycle conducted by Hannu Lintu, Mozart's Mass in C minor with Paul McCreesh, and Mahler's Sixth symphony with Osmo Vänskä; soloists appearing with the orchestra include Hilary Hahn, Christine Schäfer, Denis Matsuev and Simone Kermes. ISO concerts, usually at 1930 GMT on Thursdays, are broadcast live by the Icelandic National Broadcasting Service. At the same time the concerts are streamed via the orchestra's website www.sinfonia.is/english and are made available for further listening for 2 weeks after each concert.
