Noontime Concert in Norðurljós

There is something of a festive air about Baroque music, and even though it does not occupy the top spot in large orchestras' usual repertoire, it is always a delight to hear it on the programme. This noontime concert puts the spotlight on the orchestra's String Ensemble, which performs selections from concerti by Corelli and Vivaldi under the direction of British violinist Matthew Truscott, the respected concertmaster of the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment.

Arcangelo Corelli ranked among the 17th century's masters of instrumental music, and his concerti for string ensemble are some of the oldest orchestral pieces still performed in concert. Georg Friederich Handel, a generation younger than Corelli, is perhaps best known for his operas and oratorios, but he also wrote magnificent concerti in the Italian style. The two composers were good friends. Corelli was Rome's most famous composer when Handel came to the city as a young man, and Corelli conducted some of Handel's orchestral works.
