This programme features fresh new works from young Nordic composers selected to participate in the Nordic Music Days festival.

Finnish composer Outi Tarkiainen has received considerable acclaim for The Ring of Fire and Love, premiered in Stockholm last year. The work depicts the vivid volcanic belt in the Pacific Ocean while also referring metaphorically to a woman's experience of childbirth.

Iranian composer Idin Samimi Mofakham's pieces strongly evoke his native country. He has developed a highly original musical language that appears in very different works, including the large orchestral piece Zurvān.  Mofakham lives and works in Norway.

Sweden's Lisa Streich has described her work Segel as an important milestone in her career. In creating it, she worked for the first time with spectral chords, but the work is also quite choreographic. It was premiered at the Lucerne Festival in Switzerland in 2017.

Gunnar Karel Másson has concentrated mainly on chamber music in his compositional career. On this programme, however, we hear a new work for symphony orchestra. An established concert producer as well as a composer, Gunnar founded the Sonic Festival in Copenhagen.

Jesper Nordin is one of Sweden's leading composers of his generation. His works are performed around the world, including Ärr, which was premiered in Stockholm in 2014.  In the piece, he seeks inspiration – particularly rhythmic inspiration – in a song by Swedish heavy metal band Meshuggah.
