Russian pianist Denis Kozhukhin is well known to Icelandic audiences after his performance of Prokofiev's Second Piano Concerto in February 2019 was hailed as by a critic from Fréttablaðið as "one of the greatest fireworks displays ever seen in Harpa's Eldborg hall". Kozhukhin was unable to perform as planned during the pandemic, and it is therefore particularly exciting to welcome him back to Eldborg, this time performing the masterful First Piano Concerto by Johannes Brahms.
The concerto is monumental in scale and was inspired by the young Brahms's strong connection to Clara and Robert Schumann. Robert himself passed away before the piece was completed. For many years, Hafliði Hallgrímsson has been a leading figure among Icelandic composers and has had a dynamic and varied career, as both composer and cellist. He has received numerous awards for his work, including the Nordic Council Music Prize in 1986 for his violin concerto Poemi. It is a great pleasure to have the opportunity to give the world premiere of two new orchestral works by Hafliði, who celebrated his 80th birthday in the autumn of 2021.
The programme also includes the sparkling Third Symphony by Schubert, composed when he was only eighteen years old at a time of incredible creative exuberance.
