Few classical pieces from the 20th century have enjoyed as much popularity as German composer Carl Orff's Carmina Burana. It is based on poems from a 12th- to 13th-century manuscript containing sacred songs, drinking tunes, and love songs. The first section, O Fortuna – a song about the Wheel of Fortune, which turns incessantly and changes people's fate in the blink of an eye – is without doubt the best-known part of the work. Music from Carmina Burana can be heard widely: in advertisements, films, and even computer games.
For this concert, a large group of choirs and solo vocalists join with the ISO to perform the work under the baton of Gunnsteinn Ólafsson.
