AIŌN was inspired by abstract ideas about time and interdimensional travel. In this new work, choreographer Erna Ómarsdóttir and composer Anna Þorvaldsdóttir invite guests into a magical world where music and dance meet in an unusual way, where the members of the Iceland Dance Company and the Iceland Symphony fuse together into a single entity.

Anna and Erna are worldwide forces in their respective disciplines. Works by the Iceland Symphony’s composer-in-residence, Anna Þorvaldsdóttir, have been performed by some of the world’s leading orchestras, including the Berlin Philharmonic, the New York Philharmonic, and the Los Angeles Philharmonic.

The Iceland Dance Company’s (IDC) Artistic Director, Erna Ómarsdóttir, has won numerous awards for her works, which have been performed at major arts festivals and theatres in Europe and beyond.

AIŌN is a collaborative effort of the Icelandic Dance Company, the Iceland Symphony, and the Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra. It was premiered in Gothenburg in May 2019, performed by the Gothenburg Symphony and the IDC. The performance was received enthusiastically by critics and concertgoers alike. The critic from Dagens Nyheter described it as “a force of nature”, and Germany’s Die Presse said it “proved how well music and movement go together. The music and the dancers meld into a single whole.”

A must-see event for all who are interested in contemporary Icelandic music and dance. Don’t miss it!
