    Jean Sibelius Symphony no. 2

  • Conductor

    Osmo Vänskä

  • Soloist

    Sæunn Þorsteinsdóttir

Kaija Saariaho is revered the world over for her orchestral pieces and operas, but her solo works are equally fascinating. It was while rehearsing at the Salzburg Festival in 2000 that she wrote Sept Papillons (Seven Butterflies), an evocative expression of the fleeting and transitory. Sæunn Þorsteinsdóttir has received superb reviews from critics with major American newspapers for her expressive and vivid cello playing and has performed chamber music with the likes of Itzhak Perlman and Mitsuko Uchida. The evening's programme is rounded out by Sibelius' colourful and memorable Symphony no. 2 with Osmo Vänskä on the podium.

The concert is part of international celebration of the centenary of Finland's independence in 2017.
