ISO invited to the Nordic Cool in Kennedy Center

The Iceland Symphony Orchestra has been invited to the Nordic cultural festival Nordic Cool, to be held at Washington DC's Kennedy Center from 19 February to 17 March 2013. The ISO is flying west with an exciting programme that will be previewed in Harpa before departing.

Two of the four works on the programme are Icelandic: a new work by Hlynur Aðils Vilmarsson and AERIALITY by Anna Þorvaldsdóttir, which was premiered by the ISO in 2011. Just this spring, Anna Þorvaldsdóttir received the Nordic Prize for her work Dreymi, which was also premiered by the ISO.

The programme is rounded out by two other Nordic works: Edvard Grieg's Piano Concerto in a minor and Jean Sibelius' Lemminkäinen Suite, op 22.

American pianist Garrick Ohlsson won first prize in the Chopin Piano Competition in 1970. Since then he has been renowned as a soloist the world over and is considered one of the leading interpreters of Chopin's music. This former student of Claudio Arrau has at his command a repertoire of over 80 concertos, from Haydn and Mozart to the works of the 21st century.

During its stay in Washington, the ISO is planning a special family and children's concert at the Kennedy Center, with Maxímús Músíkús as the star of the show. The concert is being held at the request of the Kennedy Center, and there is no doubt that Maxi will enchant everyone in attendance.
