The ISO's Advent concert features well-known gems of Baroque music alongside hidden treasures from music history under the baton of Jonathan Cohen, one of the UK's foremost young Baroque conductors. The programme opens with the overture to the opera Talestri by Maria Antonia Walpurgis, Princess of Bavaria, and then Vera Panitch and Steiney Sigurðardóttir of Dúó Edda perform Antonio Vivaldi's delightful Concerto for Violin and Cello in B-flat major.

English countertenor Tim Mead is among the world's leading vocalists in his field. Here he sings both Vivaldi and Händel, including the exquisite aria Ombra mai fu from the opera Xerxes. Mozart's Symphony no. 40 in g minor is among the composer's most beloved and dramatic symphonies. Written in 1788, when Mozart's work was achieving previously unknown artistic heights and his material success was rapidly declining, the symphony brings together the impeccable refinement of the Classical style and the originality of a creative genius who charted the course to the future.
