Maximus Musicus

Maximus Musicus is Iceland Symphony's most extensive educational music project. It has been extremely successful, both as concert programmes and illustrated books with CDs. The latest story, Maximus Musicus Explores Iceland, was co-commissioned by the Iceland Symphony and Los Angeles Philharmonic and premiered at the Reykjavík Festival by the LA Phil with Icelandic conductor Daníel Bjarnason.

The authors of Maxi the musical mouse come from the Iceland Symphony Orchestra; principal flute Hallfrídur Ólafsdóttir, who passed away in 2020, wrote the stories illustrated by violist Thórarinn Már Baldursson. The first adventure, "Maximus Musicus Visits the Orchestra", won several awards and instantly made Maximus Musicus a household name amongst Icelandic families. Maestro Vladimir Ashkenazy is the patron of the project.

Iceland Symphony regularly performs Maxi concerts, invariably to a captivated full house. The New York-based music publication house, Music Word Media, publishes Maxi's tales in English.
