At this concert the Iceland Symphony performs Mahler's magnificent Symphony no. 4 under the baton of Bjarni Frímann Bjarnason.

“A symphony must be like the world. It must contain everything,” said Mahler about his compositions. Few composers are on a par with Gustav Mahler when it comes to writing for large orchestra and his fourth symphony is no exception. The symphony is built around the song "Das himmlische Leben", which presents a child's vision of heaven.

Soprano Herdís Anna Jónasdóttir was born in Ísafjörður, Iceland where she studied piano, violin and singing from an early age. For her performance as Violetta with the Icelandic Opera in 2019 she received the Icelandic Theater Award, “Gríman”, as singer of the year. Conducting the orchestra is Bjarni Frímann Bjarnason, Conductor-in-Residence at the Iceland Symphony Orchestra.

Listen to the concert live on Channel 1 (Rás 1) of the Icelandic National Broadcasting Service (RÚV).
