The Viennese masters Haydn and Brahms open and close this programme at the Iceland Symphony Orchestra, which also includes works by two American composers. Haydn’s virtuosic Cello Concerto is a masterful creation and will be performed here by Sigurgeir Agnarsson, the Iceland Symphony’s principal cellist. The concert concludes with Brahms’s Academic Festival Overture, a delightful romp of a piece that culminates with the well-known student song Gaudeamus igitur.

Julia Perry is among the 20th-century composers that have been largely forgotten, despite having written exceptionally good music. A student at Juilliard in the 1950s, she gained some attention in her time, but as a black woman composer, her opportunities were limited. Her lively concert piece has been revived with increasing frequency in the last few years and is a stunningly good work. Also on the programme is a new concerto for bass trombone by Kenneth Fuchs, whose colorful and accessible music earned him a Grammy Award for Best Classical Compendium in 2018. The BBC Music Magazine refers to him as a “master of orchestral writing” who “writes tonal orchestral music of great imagination.”
