Sibelius 150 years birth anniversary

The Sibelius-Trilogy

The year 2015 marks the 150th anniversary of the birth of the great Finnish composer Jean Sibelius. Hundreds of events during the jubilee year will take place in Finland and throughout the world.

Jean Sibelius (8th December 1865 - 20th September 1957) was much more than the composer of seven symphonies, a violin concerto, Finlandia and Valse Triste - he also wrote a wealth of chamber music, songs, and choral music. His tone poems and incidental stage music adds variety to the concert programmes of the world's symphony orchestras.

Sibelius's long life was a great adventure we would like to play for you as his 150th anniversary approaches.

Jean Sibelius has been a part of the Iceland Symphony Orchestra's history from it's very first season in 1950 when a whole concert was dedicated to his music. To celebrate the 150th-jubilee year, the Iceland Symphony will emphasize his music in 2015. Three of Sibelius's countrymen will conduct his music in the Harpa Concert Hall: Petri Sakari, Osmo Vänskä and Anna-Marie Helsing.

A special-series ticket, the Sibelius-Trilogy, will give it's holder a 20%-discount off tickets to three concerts containing Sibelius's music, providing they are bought simultaneously.

The concerts are:

22nd January 2015: Macbeth and Kullervo

5th February 2015: Vänskä and Third Symphonies

12th March 2015: Helsing conducts Sibelius
