Radek Baborák
Czech hornist Radek Baborák is one of the world's leading horn soloists. Appointed to the principal horn position with the Czech Philharmonic at age 18, he was also principal hornist with the Berlin Philharmonic for seven years. Since 2010, he has devoted himself to a solo career. He appears regularly with artists such as Daniel Barenboim and Seiji Ozawa. On this programme he performs the splendid concerto by Russian composer Reinhold Glière, who, among other things, taught Prokofiev and Khachaturian.
Rachmaninoff's Symphonic Dances also strike a Russian tone. They were the composer's last work, a stylish and masterfully orchestrated piece featuring melodies from Russian church music. The work begins with a recent Icelandic work, Námur (Mines) by the Icelandic composer Þórður Magnússon.
