Johannes Brahms had a keen sense of history and was especially fascinated by the works of the German Baroque masters – JS Bach in particular. He conducted Bach's compositions and arranged them, but the impact shone through in his music as well. In the fourth movement of his splendid Symphony no. 4, for instance, Brahms used a theme that came originally from one of Bach's cantatas, crafting around it a marvellous set of variations in true Baroque spirit.
At this concert, the stage is set for the symphony by the Schola Cantorum Choir, which performs one of Bach's awe-inspiring motets for two choirs that call back and forth to one another in an unforgettable way.
