This Friday series concert features three widely different works by major revolutionaries of their day. Varèse's work for solo flute was written in 1936 and derives its title from the density of platinum. John Cage was a pioneer in writing for prepared piano, and Daughters of the Lonesome Isle is among his major achievements, a sound-world previously unimaginable.
By contrast, Beethoven's Fourth Symphony is unusually light and cheerful; Robert Schumann once described it as a “slender Greek maiden standing between two Nordic giants.”
