James Ehnes
Canadian violinist James Ehnes captivated Icelandic concertgoers when he performed with the Toronto Symphony in Harpa in autumn 2014. This violin virtuoso has received both Grammy and Gramophone awards and been showered with praise by critics worldwide. “Musicianship of the highest order” was the conclusion drawn by a London Times critic who likened Ehnes' artistry to that of Paganini. On this programme, Ehnes performs the lyrical late Romantic concerto by American composer Samuel Barber, who is best known for his Adagio for Strings.
Edward Elgar's Enigma Variations are a riveting collection of variations with an unusual history, in that the composer steadfastly refused to say what theme he had used as the basis for them. One of the variations, Nimrod, has been particularly popular, and many Icelanders still remember its prominent role in the play Variations Énigmatiques by Éric-Emmanuel Schmitt, which had a successful run at the National Theatre a few years ago.
